Wrong!  What? Didn't I mention the correct choice?!! Sorry, my fault!  It's
conservation!!

Conservation can be accomplished in two different ways:
  • Change in behavior like lowering thermostats, reducing automobile
usage, turning off unnecessary lights, etc.
  • Improvement in energy efficiency of equipment, processes,
    buildings, etc.

You can see from the pie chart that residential energy use and
transportation account for almost half of our energy consumption.  These
are sectors that individuals can exert a lot of control over.  Many
techniques for saving energy in the home only require basic home
maintenance skills, or willingness to watch for and change wasteful habits.
Especially, we should target electricity conservation in the home.
Electricity is not a primary source of energy -- instead, it's a
form that
energy is transported in.  It's useful to realize that when we generate
electricity using fossil fuels, the losses due to inefficiency are very high --
for every 2.34 BTUs of energy expended at a power plant, only 1 BTU of
electric power can be accessed in a home.  Every unit of electricity
conserved saves almost two and a half times that amount of energy
elsewhere, not to mention the greenhouse gases that aren't released!

Here's how the typical household uses it's energy

Domestic energy consumption:
space conditioning, about 50%
water heating, 13%
lighting, 12%
refrigeration, 8%
home electronics, 6%
laundry appliances, 5%
kitchen appliances, 4%
other uses, about 2%

There is a large number of websites providing information about energy
conservation.  Here's a link to the U.S. Department of Energy site:

Others can be found easily by using a web search.
